Telewest Business takes business Ethernet services UK-wide
- High-speed switched optical services will enable bandwidth
consolidation, ATM and Frame Relay replacement in the public and
private sectors
18 January, 2005, Telewest Business, the supplier of broadband
communications to the public and private sector markets, today
announced the availability of new National Ethernet services for
organisations across the UK.
Telewest Business has already been providing advanced Ethernet
services to public and private sectors in metropolitan areas for a
year. National Ethernet services will complement metropolitan
services and are being targeted at large enterprises that wish to
consolidate their existing multi-site bandwidth provision, or
replace legacy ATM or Frame Relay networks.
As well as modernising or consolidating existing bandwidth
provision, organisations are also deploying switched optical
Ethernet backbone services to provide a flexible network
infrastructure for multiple applications, each of which have to be
allocated guaranteed capacity. Data, voice over IP and other
IP-based messaging services are becoming common applications over
metropolitan Ethernet and customers are wanting to deploy National
Ethernet services to network multiple sites over large
distances.
Meyrick Vevers, commercial director of Telewest Business, said:
“National Ethernet is much anticipated as it provides the ability
to transition to an unified, extremely high-speed network backbone
for the rigorous demands of current and future business
applications. Telewest Business expects National Ethernet services
to be particularly attractive to enterprises with sites across the
UK. It offers significant cost and flexibility advantages over most
existing network services given the widespread use of Ethernet in
LANs and it offers an ideal interface to a high-speed backbone
network.”
National Ethernet services, available from 10 Mbps up to 1 Gbps
connection speeds to suit the bandwidth demands of the applications
in use, offer an extremely high-speed networking infrastructure
with unparalleled flexibility. Using VLAN topologies, bandwidth can
be segmented securely and dynamically for specific critical
applications, and upgrades can be instigated remotely across the
entire network. The Telewest IP core network utilises Cisco
technology with MPLS (Multi-protocol Label Switching) and delivers
fully resilient connectivity with simplified configuration and
management. Customer access circuits are supported by World Wide
Packets Ethernet Switches.
Telewest Business will deliver National Ethernet services to
customers and can either use a single point-to-point nation-wide
service or a one-site-to-many configuration, known as point-
to-multipoint. Organisations using metropolitan Ethernet services
can also extend their connectivity over the MPLS network to link to
a single site elsewhere in the UK.
