Press release

Yorkshire Water invests heavily in advanced communications network to drive customer service excellence

  • 130 sites to be linked with advanced communications network
  • Improved communications services for 2,500 employees

28 November, 2006. ntl:Telewest Business, the supplier of communications services to the public and private sectors, is enabling Yorkshire Water to deliver better customer service. One of the region’s biggest companies, Yorkshire Water supplies 1.24 billion litres of drinking water every day, the equivalent of a glass of water for every person on the planet. The new network will produce better customer service across the region through greater staff efficiency and pave the way for future advances in communication.

The unification of Yorkshire Water’s 130 offices with an Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IPVPN) will enable the company’s employees to streamline and enhance customer care and service. The IPVPN provides a secure, flexible, scalable and fully managed infrastructure for carrying voice, video and data traffic. Other benefits include increased productivity, in addition to the cost benefits of carrying all traffic on the same network.

James Lockwood, Infrastructure Manager said: “We are already ranked as the number one utility company in the UK, and key to our continued business success is providing excellent customer service which remains at the core of our business. However, our desire to exceed our own high standards is infinite and ntl:Telewest Business is helping us to not only improve the lives of our customers, but those of our employees through greater unity and efficiency across our offices.”

Yorkshire Water operates more than 700 water and sewerage works and 120 reservoirs, and is also responsible for operating 40,000 miles of water and sewerage mains, enough pipework to circumnavigate the earth.

“Customers and the team that provides them with the service are among the most important elements in any business,” said John Cunningham, director of business markets for ntl:Telewest Business. “Service levels in the utilities industry have long been under scrutiny and Yorkshire Water’s desire to instigate a more joined up approach will inevitably lead to even better levels of customer care and help retain its position as a leading light in the utility industry.“

Installation of Yorkshire Water’s IPVPN network, which has a bandwidth of between 8 Megabits-per-second (Mbps) and 1 Gigabyte-per-second (GBps), is scheduled to start in December 2006.
