DTI chooses ntl:Telewest Business for major consolidation

  • Extensive structured cabling renewal at two central London sites
  • Project increases flexible working within DTI

19 July 2006 - As part of the Department for Trade and Industry’s (DTI) estate rationalisation programme, ntl:Telewest Business has provided completely new SYSTIMAX Solutions structured cabling for both the Victoria Street and Buckingham Palace Road DTI premises and has now also started delivering voice services.

The DTI has now consolidated from seven to two London sites, and has introduced flexible desking and communications systems across the remaining premises. The project was undertaken following an Office of Government Commerce (OGC) Buying Solutions invitation to tender. ntl:Telewest Business worked alongside the DTI Estates Team, IT contractor Fujitsu Siemens and the DTI’s telecommunications team to complete the assignment, which now provides high speed, dependable communications services to the two DTI HQ buildings in SW1, London.

The major elements of the project undertaken for the DTI by ntl:Telewest Business were:

  • Implementation of 6,000 RJ45 outlets of Category 6 Structured Cabling from six secondary equipment room (SER) locations on three floors.
  • Introduction of a resilient backbone to support the distribution cabling. This consisted of OM3 laser-optimised fibre optic, Category 6 copper and Category 3 (CW1308) voice cabling.
  • All data backbone services were designed to provide total resilience with routes from each SER to the main and resilient equipment rooms and to an additional SER.

A DTI spokesperson said: “This programme has been a significant success and ntl:Telewest Business was a valued part of the team that contributed to the successful delivery of the project. We have been very pleased with how this assignment was assessed, planned, undertaken and completed.”

Stephen Beynon, Managing Director, ntl:Telewest Business, said: “As Government departments undertake major projects to increase their operational efficiency, the deployment of advanced communications that deliver on their promises is of utmost importance. Working with the DTI is a huge endorsement of ntl:Telewest Business’ expertise and experience in delivering solutions and services to local and central government.”
