Smart approaches to security

More and more companies are using the internet and websites as business platforms. However e-business raises some important security issues which must be addressed if you are to protect both your company information and the computers on which you rely. Whether you are big or small, working over the internet extends business opportunities and contributes to efficiency but it can increase the risks making it essential to implement security policies and procedures and regularly review them.

There are considerable advantages to using the internet, not least of which is that people working anywhere can access corporate  applications including email, diaries and product literature. You can streamline your operations and make it easier for suppliers and customers to contact you by giving them online access to company databases and applications including billing, sales / product catalogues, purchasing or even personnel. However, opening up your networks can only be safely done if you can control access, ensure the connections are secure and you know who is visiting.

Most companies now make security a condition of doing business so that if you want to work with others via the internet you must comply with their standards. This is especially true in the public sector where security breaches could have serious consequences.

Joined up government

Like most organisations, governments are introducing policies to streamline and make the ways in which they interact with their public more efficient and cost effective. They are turning to e-business as the solution. However, getting on the list of preferred suppliers depends not only on being able to deliver but on having the right security policies and systems and proving compliance. To win and keep public sector contracts you must demonstrate that you have installed rigorous security systems to protect not only your networks but the applications running over them. You must also comply with data protection laws and other government regulations and legislation.
